Each Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) – formerly known as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) – represent the equivalent of one megawatt hour (MWh) of generated electricity from an accredited renewable energy source. The number of STCs you receive depends on the location of your installation in Australia, as well as the size of your installation. STCs can be traded for cash and the value fluctuates according to market conditions. STCs can be generated on a yearly basis, every five years or for a one-off payment which covers up to 14 years (the most popular method for cashing in STCs. You can keep your STCs however this would disqualify you from claiming the maximum upfront subsidy on your PV system.
Power is instantaneous and is measured in watts (W). Energy is measured over time in joules (J) or kilowatt-hours (kWh). Energy is power multiplied by time; for example, if you have 100 W bulb on for 10 hours, the energy you use (and the electricity you will be charged for) is 100 x 10 or 1000Wh (i.e. 1kWh). Note that it makes sense to talk about using a number of kWh per day but not kW per day.
Solar hot water uses the heat of the sun to heat water, a thermal process. Solar PV uses the light of the sun to create a flow of electrons into a solar cell and thus an electrical current. This is called a photovoltaic (PV) process. There are also solar thermal plants that generate electricity – these use the heat of the sun, usually on concentrating mirrors to boil water and create steam which powers conventional electrical turbines (similar to a coal-fired power station using the sun instead of coal).
Our test and tag services check your workplace electrical equipment for faults. That helps workplaces meet their OH&S duty of care to employees. When equipment is tested and found to be operating safely, we will apply a tag that states the next test due date.
No. It’s illegal in Queensland for anyone but a licensed electrician to do any kind of electrical job, big or small. Not only that, it’s dangerous! Make sure your electrical work is done by a qualified, experienced and licensed professional. That way it will pass certification and won’t be a danger to you or anyone else.
Generally, once a quarter for homes and once a month for commercial locations. This will depend on the air quality in your location and the nature of your building’s use. The more dust and debris in the air, the more frequently your filter needs to be cleaned.
